In Agua Dulce you will have to scrounge for a ride to the REI in  
Northridge. I think it was around 30-45 minute drive. When I was  
there in 2008 we were still able to borrow LRod's cars. I don't know  
what the ride situation is like, but something tells me it works out.

Bend has an REI, too. Pretty easy to get a ride to Bend. I was almost  
required to go to Bend--twice--just to give the trail angels  
something to do!

I don't know what Ashland had, but it was a relatively large city and  
a college town so there's got to be somewhere to get shoes. There was  
bus service to Medford which is also a city and a little less precious.
