I brought chia seeds on my 2010 PCT attempt. I also learned about it from Born to Run. I mixed it in with my energy drinks and let it set for about 1/2 hour. The seeds form little soft balls like you get in tapioca which are pleasant to chew on. I like it a lot and it did seem to give me a lot of energy - although there were other things I was doing so I am not sure what really helped. I did have a few thru-hikers I met on the trail who pointed out to me that there were things floating in my drink. Yes, I did that on purpose.
