Two good sources for basic map and compass training are (1) your local outfitter, if it conducts seminars on hiking / camping skills.  If it doesn't, suggest they do. 



(2) the ROTC dept at your nearest college / university.  If you find the right person on staff, they will likely let you sit in for the portion of the class when they teach map and compass, without having to register or pay.  The instructor will usually have the students do lots of exercises to reinforce the subject area being taught, which is helpful. 



I was with Shroomer et al. through the Sierra last summer, and even though he didn't pull his compass out, a couple of us did so, and found it helpful.  I definitely believe you should have at least a basic knowledge of map and compass skills, and especially know when to use them.
