Paul:

Heat is very good to loosen the muscles, but only after any swelling or
inflammation is GONE, otherwise you can make it worse. I fell 20+ feet off a
ladder onto my tailbone in 1980 (old guys always give the date). Heat still
helps my back.

I recently had an athletically induced back injury that was diagnosed by an
orthopedist as purely muscle related. It took about 2 months to heal
completely. The doctor prescribed me Skelaxin (metaxalone), a muscle
relaxant that helped significantly (unlike vicodin it doesn't really impair
you which is nice) in addition to some really mild stretches: lie on your
back, bring one knee to chest, put it back down, other knee, then both
knees. After I started feeling like I was recovering daily stretching/yoga
was incredibly valuable. Its probably most important to make sure that its
muscle related rather than something else because that'll help determine if
stretching is good or bad for it.

good luck!
