The PCT officially starts and ends at the US borders with either Canada or
Mexico. You are "finished" when you reach the monument 2600 miles north or
south of the one from which you started . The trail from monument 78 at the
border to Manning Park Lodge is just a shorter way to public transportation
than backtracking to Harts Pass and points south. Think of it as an access
trail.

I was wondering if you could elaborate on the "DUI issue".  Is there any way
around this and what do you mean when you say "had to backtrack".  I cannot
imagine the heart break of not being able to finish for something so inanely
bureaucratic!  Thanks.
