[pct-l] Mt Whitney Permit

One note regarding leaving your pack at Guitar Lake. The Marmots there are
world-class!

If you leave your pack (and any food) be sure you have thought through how
to keep it Marmot proof, or expect the pack to have new ventilation holes
and your food supply to be reduced a few days. In particular, do not leave
your pack anywhere near rock piles (Marmot country), and do use several
trash compactor bags, one inside another, to hide your food smells. Or
whatever approach you deem prudent, but beware of the Guitar Lake marmots.

Greg:

This comes up every year.

You do not need a Mt Whitney permit to summit from the west side - unless
you are planning to exit over Trail Crest and down to Whitney Portal. Your
PCTA Thru-Hiker's Permit is all you'll need.

Plan to camp at Guitar Lake the night before the ascent. Take minimal kit
(water and a wind shirt) and make an early (6 am) start up the switchbacks.
Leave your pack and gear in your shelter at GL. You'll be on top by 10 and
back by 1 pm. Pack up your gear and make tracks to set up for Forrester Pass
the next morning.
