Smokie Reinhold writes:Actually the hut was build a long time ago when Mountain Men were still Mountain Men and ''Grizzlies'' and "Saber-toothed Tigers" roamed the trails and were nervous. Why were they nervous?.....Because Switchback and Reinhold fried them over an open fire in the fireplace using their hide and fat for fuel. It made a very smoky flame....that is where the name smoked meat came from.
To verify the truth of what I have just said you need only to look at the stone wall behind and above the fire place, all blackened by the smoke, from the Switchback and Reinhold cook-outs, a long time ago.

Crunchie Switchback replies: You I have to admit Smokie brought back some memories of the retreat of the last Ice Age and those BBQ Brown Bear snacks we used to enjoy on the PCT. Back in those days we did not carry food or water. Melt off was always available and tasty trail food was for the asking. No problem. In fact, I remember some hikers doing the whole trail unsupported vegetarian. There was that much eatable plant life too. That was the Class of B.C.E. I think Smokie Reinhold will remember the Neanderthal hiker who did the Yo-Yo PCT vegetarian. You could always tell where he went by the lawn mower path through the brush. I remember Smokie trying to follow him one time, but lost him above treeline.
