[pct-l] Fuel and books

I've used alcohol and canisters on long distance hikes and still do. Just depends on where I'm going, weather, who I'm with. I'm a "just boil water" cook on the trail. I don't hike to do dishes so the pot only boils water, the mug gets cleaned the backpacker tea way. I scratch a tally mark on the canister for every 2 cups of water I boil. A small butane canister will do this 10 times, a large one about 16. It varies of course but I've only run out of fuel once and it was before I started marking the canisters! Lesson learned!

On the PCT my son Mongous and I read out loud to each other most evenings from favorite sci-fi or fantasy books. We keep them in a large ziploc because of the dust and moisture. Partway along our thru-hike a new Harry Potter was released in hardcover. My daughter ripped it out of the cover in chunks with several chapters that matched the section length we were hiking and included it in our resupply box. By the end of the hike we had three other tents close to ours at night so everyone could hear the chapter. We finished the book the night before we finished the trail.
