I bet I looked frightening and a bit like a wet animal dragged in from the
storm that morning Paul. There was still some frozen stuff on the ground
even as low as Warner Springs, but you're right, we didn't cross paths after
that. Meeting you and Echo on trail before Mt. Laguna and that evening,
were wonderful however, and I would love to have hiked further with you
guys. Maybe I'll see you at kickoff?

I spent today with Freefall, the MC for kickoff and a great hiker, and gave
him a tour of John Muir's home in Martinez. No matter how many times I have
gone through that beautiful Victorian mansion, I never fail to be moved by
what he did from that old oak desk in his "scribblers den," where he wrote
10 of his 11 books, began the Sierra Club, began the modern environmental
movement, changed the way our nation views wilderness, and fought the
loosing battle to save Hetch Hetchy. He never got to see how loosing that
battle ultimatly would lead congress to create the National Parks Service,
something that he had long worked toward. His death, and the realization
that if San Francisco could dam up one of the great canyons of Yosemite
National Park, finally brought congress around to seeing that the National
Parks needed an agency to protect them, even from the government itself.

Sorry, I can go on. Anyone out there on this list excessivly moved by Muir,
should give me a hollar. I live directly in back of the park in Martinez,
and love to take hikers and angels on tours of the lovely old place, and a
hike up Mount Wanda, and Helen nearby, where he took his two daughters
hiking when they were young. I've done it for years, and if not on trail
myself, welcome the time with fellow trail lovers.
