Bear cans are only _required_ in specific areas.  See the map here:

Where you _choose_ to carry them might be different.  One poster to the 
list said they carried the can the whole trail.  Others have posted that 
they chose to never carry the can, trusting in finding what food lockers 
still remain, or choosing to disregard of the regulations.  NOBO hikers 
that use bear cans for the required areas seem to choose to pick them up 
either in Kennedy Meadows or Lone Pine via Trail Pass.

It a choice you must make, weighing the consequences to yourself, your 
hike, and primarily, to the bears.
