My only reference is from talking to the bear management ranger we met in the backcountry in Kings Canyon and Yosemite rangers.

Last Labor Day we camped at the group campsites in Tuolumne. There was a bear and her cub making camp raids not just at night, but during the day, also. She managed to always find something left out, which was just enough reward to convince her to keep returning. One morning, after chasing her away from our camp, I talked to a ranger about her. We were watcing her circle back around to pick up her cub who was way up in a lodgepole. I asked him what would happen to her. He said they would probably shoot her next year. He thought that was a shame, she'd been around for a couple of years and he said he liked her. I was afraid to ask about the cub.

It's important to protect bears from our food.
