The permits available from the PCT are not associated with climbing
Whitney from the PCT.

The basic permit is simply for hiking 500 or more miles on the PCT and
avoids having to obtain permits from the variety of jurisdictions you
might normally have to contact.

In addition if you want to *exit* and *reenter* via Whitney Portal you
can purchase the *additional* $15 Whitney permit. If you are just
climbing Whitney from the PCT and returning to the PCT (i.e. via
Crabtree Meadows on the west side of Whitney) they you do not need
the additional Whitney permit from the PCT.

The vast majority of PCT thru-hikers do not exit/re-enter
the trail (i.e. for resupply) via Whitney Portal but instead handle
their resupply via Kennedy Meadows, Trail Pass, or Kearsarge Pass.
