On PCT day one. Bob Reiss dropped me at trail head on May 5. Bless you, Bob. I
went forth w/o sufficient water. Half way to the county park ran out. Tucked
under mesquite and waited in hot sun. Along came two gals and Frank from Quebec-
girls with wonderfully colored parasols, handles stuck down between back of pack
and back. Gave me water. Trod forward- first day, mind you (of a hopefully 2,650
mile trek.) Howser Canyon- you remember Howser (I sure do.) There where one is
advised never to overnight. Ran out of water second occasion. Maybe four PM and
afforded wonderful view from the shady grass there of a pair struggling slowly
up that bare unprotected slope ahead- is it possibly 800/900 vert. lift? Damn.
Talked to myself-talked to myself... in sternest terms: "Patterson, you are
knucklehead; here, first day- the very first day, all fucked up and you think
you will make 2,650 miles more...Is NO chance...N O T." Well remember that
conversation...Had no idea anyone still coming. No folks much on PCT was my
experience other than through hijkers and I don't count cards but thought I
might be sunk / thus camping in Howser and thus to be met by illegals at 3 AM as
most folks had passed through. Yureka, Ureka, Eureka, whatever...along come the
parasols and Frank and all hydrated w. extra still! Carried six quarts there
on.

Made it to Belden last night. The snow levels between Sierra City and here
were negligible. Summer is definitely here. For thrus....they are now
having to deal with pack chafing and blisters again because of the lack of
snow and hotter weather.
Being, on average, 2-3 weeks behind a normal year, the salmon run for a
09/15-09/30 finish has begun.

Yep, I'll be the first to recount my last stupid decision that nearly cost me.
Coming back down the snow covered slope of the famous 99 switchbacks on Mt
Whitney we could see where someone had glissaded down. I decided to try it and
within the first two seconds I realized I was in trouble, with my legs flopping
back and forth and threatening to pull me out of the icy slot. My ice axe
wouldn't slow me down as a brake and when I tried to self arrest by rolling over
on it, it wouldn't either and I'm almost bounced out. Fortunately for me the
run out was clean and the softening angle finally allowed the ax as a brake to
work. This icy side of the slot took most of the skin off of my wrist. It
could have been MUCH worse! Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Let's all chime in here! What's your stupidest thing that you've ever done in
the wilderness? Maybe we can all learn from each other's mistakes.

How many of us have done something totally stupid that should have cost us
greatly but we sigh a huge relief for the grace or the luck that kept us out
of trouble. Yes is was totally stupid - as I'm sure they were thinking as
they plunged over the falls.
I would hope that we'd instead be thinking of the shock and sadness that
those left behind are experiencing right now, and sending our thoughts and
prayers that way instead of such a harsh response. "He who is without sin

I have NEVER made a stupid mistake on the PCT <grin>
But about 12 years ago I was on a vacation and I took my 10 year old daughter
and 4 year old son into what I thought was a 1/2 mile or so lava tube in New
Mexico. It went in then underground a couple hundred yards and popped back
out. We were dressed for New Mexico 110 degree weather.
Turns out that the OTHER direction in this tube went down several miles. I took
the wrong direction and by the time big brave daddy realized that I had a
problem I had already worked the three of us about 20 minutes in with 100% total
darkness. My daughter slipped and gashed her leg on the lava. My son freaked
out and cried for mommy (who was smart and sat in the car). I quickly realized
at this point that a LOT of bad things could happen if I did not figure
something out fast.
Somehow I got turned around and we were facing a wall and not the exit. I found
this out using my face as the leading edge. Son scrapped his head on ceiling
riding my back. Daughter really stepped up and went from being 10 to acting
like a young adult in a hurry. We took it one step at a time and eventually saw
light. We now know what miners must feel like at the end of a shift. From the
point we saw light it took us another 20 minutes to get out but that was just
fine.
Upon exit both kids ran to mom and told on me. I just walked past the van and
headed towards the freeway. Walking from New Mexico to Sacramento had to be
better than what she was going to do to me. In the end the story is told with
smiles. But the risk of what COULD have gone wrong is unbelievable. If we come
across a rattlesnake or I get knocked out it is likely that it would have taken
hours for my wife to know there was a problem, go get help and the help to come
get us.
But that was NOT on the PCT so I am just fine <grin>

The Pacific Crest Trail will be closed at the
I-90 North Trailhead Monday July 25 thru Thursday July 28. Trail crew
members from the CleElum Ranger District will be working to remove a
"log jam" that is blocking the trail approximately one mile north of
the trailhead.
This is an extensive area of blown down timber and will require several methods
of removal which will take several days.
Trail crew members will be staged at each end of the projet area during
active work periods to advise hikers of the closure. The closure will
also be posted at the trailhead.
The trailcrew members appreciate your patience and understanding during this

Perhaps it is cold-hearted for the harsh comments about the stupidity of the
hikers, but let it be so.
Having been to the top of Vernal Falls earlier this month I can't imagine
crossing the guard rail. Lapse of judgement with severe consequences gets a
harsh response. My heart does not bleed for these people. For their family,
absolutely.
But more so for the SAR who has to put their lives on the line to scoop their
bodies out of the Merced when they turn up, if ever. They are putting SAR lives
in danger, and that's not ok in my book. Not to mention the people who will be
forever traumatized having watched them go over the falls after pleading with
them to heed safety warnings.

Instead of looking for an acceptable place to cross a raging creek, I
asked my hiking partner if she was ok to jump from rock to rock to
cross, with a lethal outcome if you missed.
We both made it without incident, but the nagging "what if" has always
haunted me. The jump was a bit of a stretch, but doable. Had I fallen
it would have been bad, had she of fallen it would have been much,
much worse. Regrets, lessons learned.
P.S.
Regarding the church group members going over the falls; somewhere I
think it's written that the devout can't be nominated for 'Darwin'
awards, it was gods will. ;)

Or what are now THOUSANDS of visitors, many who will NEVER get another chance
who have been denied access to the trail.
As of this morning local news reports that the Mist trail is still shutdown with
no idea when it will open. I just hope they don't replace the current fence
with some chain-link thing that is safer but ruins the view. It is, after all,
the Federal Government that makes such decisions.

I was a young 20 something back in 1974, just out of the service, hitching my
way back home when I decided to stop at Yellowstone Park for some impromptu
hiking in the backcountry.
I didn?t have a lot of gear, but it didn?t matter, because I was only day
hiking, and wanted to experience some of the wildlife.?
My theory was that I was a nature boy, and therefore the animals would pick up
on that and would allow me to get closer to them then they would allow the
regular park visitors.? I felt that at that time I had a special ability to
commune with nature.? After all, I rationalized, up to this point I had spent
countless hours and miles hiking the back country and learned all I could about
nature and its ways, and was very confident in my abilities.?
I came upon a herd of Bison grazing on the prairie.?? There were probably 20 or
30 of them.? They seemed very docile.? I crept up closer to watch them in their
natural habitat, and they really didn?t mind me being there.
I inched my way closer and closer until I was right in their midst.? They didn?t
bolt or stampede or really do anything.? They just continued to graze, ignoring
me.? I took this as an affirmation that I was indeed tuned in to nature, and was
able to commune with the wildest of animals.? I was the ultimate nature boy.?
I walked right up to one of the Bison to see if he would mind, and again,
nothing happened.? He just stood there.? I slowly began to pet him as one would
pet a favorite pet. ?It didn?t even faze him.? He just kept on grazing.? By now
I was convinced I had special powers.? Remember I was only in my early 20s and
pretty dumb.?
Well, I started to give this Bison a hug, when suddenly he reared up his head,
and head butted me right in the nose.? I was shocked at the sudden movement and
the resulting pain.? My nose was broken and I was bleeding all over the place.?
The Bison just walked off.
It could have been much worse.? He could have gored me, trampled me, or killed
me I guess.? I was such a touron.?
As I think back on this event, I am amazed at my stupidity.? I am also still
somewhat embarrassed, even though 40 years have passed.?
When we are young, we think we are invincible, and will take risks that others
with more years under their belt would not think of doing.? I certainly would
never even think of doing something like that again.?
I wanted to respond to this thread, because I think that everyone does stupid
things from time to time, and sometimes it costs us dearly.? For some it is
their lives, others it is some debilitating injury that lasts a life time.? For
me it was just a bloody nose and the realization that animals in the wild are
just that,? Wild. No matter how much time you spend in the wilderness, they will
not recognize you as a kindred spirit.

Just this moment hung up from speaking with Beacon. He is happily at the Etna
Hiker Hut and has good news. He just did Dunsmuir to Etna in four days. He
states the trail is clear of snow other than "a couple of places where the snow
lasts maybe 100 yards". He said the "trail is beautiful" and he couldn't be more
pleased. Going to continue on north. There are others a head of him, also.

So far from what I've read about the Mist Trail is that it is back to being open
and that rangers had no immediate plans to put any extra signage or fencing up
because they felt what is in place is adequate.

find some place to camp, but I couldn't tell you where. It would be a

and not hilly. It might be kind of like trying to find a place to
camp at the I5 near the McDonald's at Cajon Pass. You know, not
really wilderness, kind of sketchy homeless-style camping. I think
from there, it climbs a bit near Pilot Rock and there might have been
some more wilderness-feeling camping around there. Maybe somebody has
better information about that area.

Best food? In my opinion, it's stuff that's easy to find in a small
store. I don't like relying on maildrops. A few are okay but too many
are annoying. The tyranny of the post office and all that.
A good website is Dicentra's One Pan Wonders. http://
www.onepanwonders.com/ She's got good recipes. You will probably not
be able to do all of those for a thru-hike, but it might give you
some ideas you hadn't thought of. Dicentra has not done a thru-hike,
but she's an expert on making good food!
Most people start the trail between approximately April 15 and May
15. Some start earlier or later, but not much.
It's best, in my opinion, to hike the trail alone and then meet
people along the way. You will certainly find people you enjoy and
form a group to hike together if that is what you like. It's better
than finding someone in advance because those partnerships usually
don't last long unless there's a wedding ring involved. I met people
within 20 miles of the border.

My recollection is much the same as Piper?s. Also, the trail near the
freeway is -- or used to be -- substantially across relatively narrow
private land easements which will restrict camping possibilities.
Last summer I stopped at Callahan?s several times to haul hiker trash to
Ashland, and some of them were camping on the grass behind the lodge. I?m
not sure if that is still an option.

from I-80 to Burney Falls (end of section M). I am trying to plan
transportation to the trailhead. Other than hitching, it seems my options are
limited. Unfortunately I am not arriving during the week day otherwise the

might get me down the road closer to my destination. I see there are some
shuttle services going to and from the airport

Truckee Train Depot. Lastly, any suggestions on getting to the trailhead?

There is an REI in Reno. They sell Canisters for your Jetboil.? I also use a
Jetboil.
I don't think women should hitch alone. It is also easier to get a ride when I
am alone. I rode my horse from Mexico to Canada on the PCT - except I had to
miss the Sierra (pre-planned) because there was too much snow when I arrived
there in mid-June. I had to do a lot of hitching - but I am a man. I would leave
my horse in safe hands and drive my rig ahead and cache my resupplies( including
my canisters) near PCT road crossings and TH's. Then park my rig near the PCT
100 to 300 miles north, and hitch back to my horse.
I have a similar but much more complicated transportation problem than yours for
my planned SOBO ride this summer starting in Sierra City.? Probably on August 16
because of the snow and downed trees. If the late September weather turns bad I
might have to bail somewhere north of my goal, which is Horseshoe Meadows.
I will have left my horse in Sierra City and cached at two locations on the way
south to the U.S.Marine Training Center east of Sonora Pass, where I have
permission to park. To get back to S.City I will first take the Crest bus, they
will pick me up at the intersection of 108 and 395. They will get me to the
Greyhound bus station in Reno by 12:15 PM.? Then, while on the Crest bus I will
have asked other passengers if they are going west on 80. It's possible that
someone might either parked a car there or that they have arranged for someone
to pick them up at the bus station. Lacking that I will hitch to Truckee - and
hitch north on 89 to 49 and then west to Sierra City. From my past experience
hitching I am confident that I will be back in Sierra City by about 6:00 PM.
When I arrive by horse at the Marine Center I will trailer to the Levitt Meadows
Pack Station, leave my horse and move trailer south to Red's Meadow - and hitch
back. I will continue
south from there if weather conditions are encouraging.
I'm not considering the shuttle bus service from Reno to Truckee because it
leaves at about 8:30 AM and would require me to spend the night in Reno.
For you, there is an AMTRACK service that could get you to Truckee - I think
that they also leave Reno early. And you would still have over 11 miles to go to
get to the TH.? You might try calling the Pooh Corner angel - there might be
someone there who could help get you to the TH.

The three day hikers that went over Vernal Fall were part of a church
youth group of 12 from small nearby community. They had hiked the 1.5
mile mist trail to the falls. There were many witnesses
Several of the church members had gone around the guardrails and into
the
water ignoring many people that said to "get out of there. That's not
safe"
One person slipped into the Merced River and the other two reaching
also tumbled in. It was no more than 5 or 6 seconds of them bobbing
in the water before they went over Vernal Fall, plunging 300 feet to
their deaths.
This makes a total of 6 people have died in water related deaths this
year in Yosemite National Park. Sign warning of the danger of swift
waters have been
ignored. At least 14 others have gone over Vernal Falls since the
park begain keeping records in 1924 - the last being in 2005 - his
body was not found.
What happened to the 14: Stumbled and fell, lost footing in the
river, slipped trying to retrieve his canteen, lost trying to rescue
prior, 2 unknown reason, playing solo near the lip of the falls age
7, mother and daughter went into the river for photo's, went swimming
175 feet above fall and caught in the current, climbed over the
railing to fill canteen and slipped, possibel suiside, climbed over
the railing and slipped trying to take a photo over the lip, and
climbed over the railing and slipped while trying to wash his face.
