Here are some statistics from "Off The Wall: Death In Yosemite"
published in 2007. Chapter 1 recounts the deaths of 44 people going
over various falls in Yosemite. Three of those that died were "would
be rescuers." Their ages ranged from 9-49 years of age. The nine
year olds' mother died trying to rescue her.

In the book the author quotes anthropologist Loren Eisley who said,
"If there is magic on this planet it is contained in water." The
author himself wrote, "Indeed the fascination engendered by water,
especially dramatically moving water, can act on us humans much the
way a flame attracts a moth." Sadly too many have lost their lives
in the falling waters of Yosemite. Related there were 153 drownings
in the book. Several were "would be rescuers" including a group of
three in one incident.
