If you are going to Independence, I would highly recomend staying at the Court House Motel. It is incredibly hiker friendly, the price is right and we all felt very much at home. Very cool court yard to hang out in and the rooms are very clean. 

The owners brother, Paul, helps run the place and enjoys taking care of hikers. He made a very nice dinner for us the night we stayed here. It was a very nice place to recharge our batteries after hiking in the snow non stop for five days  : )
