[pct-l] Maps and such-

Tony,
Last year I followed the advice in Yogi's book - tear out pages of Guidebooks, Databook, and her Town Guide book for each section. For me, the Guidebook and Databook pages were useless weight. At night I was too tired to read the GB, and the Data book did not have cumulative mileage numbers at each feature. However, I have really enjoyed reding the Guidebook after coming home.
For me, Halfmile's maps and the appropriate pages from Yogi's Trail Tips book were sufficient, along with a compass. However, others I hiked with swore by the Databook and/or Eric the Black's Atlas. One thing we found - in the Sierra, it's very helpful to have all three map sets in your group, along with the Tom Harrison maps.
A gps doesn't hurt either, if you're not the one who has to carry it. At times, when the trail was completely snow-covered for miles, it was reassuring to consult all available sources to confirm our location and direction of travel.
Good Luck,
Mango

Can you guys let me know if its sufficient to have just halfmiles maps and
the data book for a successful thru? I have the Wilderness Press books, but
don't feel like bringing them along if I don't have to.
Cheers-
Tony
