If your heading Northbound then the maps and compass will be sufficient.  If
your heading SoBo I recommend a GPS as well (trail heading sobo is not
marked nearly as well in Washington sections).

No matter what you should bring a compass (if you value your life that is).
Not that you'll necessarily need it.  But if you ever do and you don't have
one, and it's overcasts for several days in a row, well.....  Let's just say
the phrase "the moss only grows on the North side of the tree" is complete
BS.
