[pct-l] Budget hiking

Good morning!
 
"Hiking" is just shorthand for "responsible hiking."  
 
"Budget hiking" is just shorthand for "responsible budget hiking."  Both
encompass preparedness, common sense, and common decency.  
 
If you think you will have to ask someone for money, food, or supplies,
don't go.  
 
Hiker boxes are for sharing with all who will come after.  If you think
you will need to take disproportionately, don't go.
 
It's easier to get a job and save ahead for the hiking expenses than to
get a job while on the trail.   And, that job on the trail may prevent
you from completing the thru.  
 
The PCT exacts a toll on hikers that rely on dumb luck - full water
caches, well-supplied hiker boxes, dry weather, trail magic at every
turn, flowing seasonal streams, minimal snow, and the like.  You're
gambling, and being irresponsible.  Irresponsible hikers are both tragic
and well-remembered, by fellow hikers, by angels, by townfolks.
Boyoboyoboy, you really don't want that.
 
Get Yogi's guidebooks.  It's amazing how lucky you are when you have the
essential equipment, a plan to get you thru, and a bit more money than
you think you will need.
