Paul,

Please look for our advice on this subject called, "Just good advice from 
'Iceaxe'"

The need for snow shoes as a thru hiker going up the length of the Sierra in 
the months of May thru July is unnecessary. We tested out the MSR Lightning 
Ascents, best on the market for traversing on nasty snow surfaces, last May 
and June from Kennedy Meadows north through Muir Pass and only needed them 
once in 40 days. Katoola traction devices, on the other hand, are a good 
idea. Better yet are good boots, but that is another story...
