Dear James,

Completely dehydrated Protein and Carbohydrates have about 4 kcal's per
gram. Fat (nuts) have 9 kcal's per gram. So 4,000 calories of pure protein
and carbohydrates will weigh about 2.2 lbs. About 4,000 calories of pure
fat will weigh about .9 lbs, less than half that. Burning carbohydrates is
most efficient for your body's needs on the trail but it is a burden to
carry so bring maybe about 30% fat calories, nuts soy nuts etc. Tall young
men may want to bring more than that.

I think one young man a month ago says he brings 50% fat calories and does
fine. Fat calories are the easiest to carry as your body derives more
energy per weight. That is why your body stores extra energy as fat in your
body. It is the easiest to carry around.
