What is important to mention, here, is that, unless people have been back there under such a heavy snow load, they only see the surface snow in the picture and have no idea just how deep it really is.

You can see around the Hut that there is about 5 or 6 feet of snow on the ground there, but keep in mind that is a windy and exposed location where not much snow can accumulate. In the foreground are rolls and piles and masses of deep powder/snow that hide all the rough rocks and ridges and other formations seen during the summer.

It may be melting, but if you look at the day and nighttime temps recently, the thaw hasn't started yet!

Mountain Education will be up and over Forester soon, teaching a SAC course (Snow Advanced Course) May 20 - 30 and we'll report back the depths, temps, and coverages at elevations of interest to the PCTA and Kennedy Meadows General Store.
