Kellie - I highly recommend that you get Jester's PCT Documentary "Wizards
of the PCT" www.wizardsofthepct.com

In that movie, you (and your family) will see solo female hikers within the
PCT community.  I think it might ease their worries, plus it's a damned
good movie.
