[pct-l] Three Questions/Going Stoveless

Well said, MendoRider!

Wilderness travel stoveless is not an option as far as we're concerned. Not
only is a hot meal soothing and relaxing as it re-heats the body after a
long day's hike, it is a very important safety tool. Whether you're about to
pack up in the morning and need to pre-warm up, get some good, hot food in
you, before heading outside into the frost or snow to pack the tent and
otherwise stomp around before going down the trail making muscle-heat or
you're already cold after a long day of calorie-burning, creek-crossing, and
snow-sliding and could really use the tent up quick, the pad rolled out, and
your Self inside your down bag while cooking a nice, hot meal before going
to sleep, this is where a stove is a life-saver! Not to mention
hypothermia...

Whatever works for the individual on the PCT. Do you also eat cold food when
you are in town? For me, on the trail, I look forward to a hot meal. I
always start with rich hot chocolate - a pint of Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate
Sensation (two 1.25 ounce packages of 150 calories each) with lots of Nido
added - a total of about 350 calories - and delicious. I used a Jetboil
stove. I liked that I could control the flame - easily shut it off or lower
it tto simmer. I did, if it was raining, sometimes cook in the vestibule of
my tent. I never had that stove flare up. The Jetboil is also very
fuel-efficient.

Did someone say FOOD!? That got my attention!!

I think a lot of hikers ditch the stove, not because of weight, but because
they just don't want to spend the time making meals. Faster and easier to
just eat something.

That said... Any of the just-add-water, freezerbag cooking, types of meals
can be eaten hot or cold. They will take a little more time to rehydrate in
cold water, but if you think ahead, your meals can be rehydrating while you
are hiking... Then your food is ready whenever you are ready to stop.

Yes, this even works for cold (gag, imho) instant oatmeal...

Do what works for you. HYOH.

I hope that's helpful...
