I hike with Kelly, my Jack Russell terrier, When I set up camp, she has her 
own pad and place inside my tarp.  At night I place my two food bags on each 
side of her.  No right minded bear or mouse would tangle with her. I haven't 
had any critter troubles when hiking with any of my trail dogs in 30yrs. I 
keep my pack inside if it rains, or if I note any deer or bear issues.  Deer 
are a bigger problem than bears due to their craving for salt.
