There are many guidebooks that illuminate mileage and exit areas into towns.  Also, there is a hiking group out of San Diego that you might want to look into.  The shorter hikes are really enjoyable and present many of the same challenges that you will encounter should you decide to hike for longer distances.  I have learned so much from my section hikes and am always amazed at the number of hikers who begin a thruhike with little or no real knowledge about backpacking. 'God bless 'em!' Have a great time.
