[pct-l] Mid layering

I'm planning on doing a thru hike of the JMT next summer and since im a newbie when it comes it comes to high country backpacking and plan on doing plenty of shorter trips on Jacinto in the mean time I was looking for some variety of opinions on mid layers. I've gone through plenty of others gear list and it seems there is a wide variety of options. 
So maybe you all can hit me with your  personal opinions. Fleece and what weight? Down? Synth? Brands? Bang for buck? give it to me! I want to hear it all.
