I use an umbrella in the desert, and I like it a lot.  It really does keep
you cooler, which means you drink less water, which means your pack weight
is lower.

I tried attaching my umbrella to my pack, but I didn't like it.  The sun is
not always overhead, plus the desert is windy.  It helps to have your
umbrella in your hands.
