Shepherd,

They are all good but the bigger and deeper the lake the better I caught
some descent fish in Rae Lakes but you have to walk around a bit and try
to get your bait out towards the middle of the lake. Some of the real
high lakes like Wanda Lake are not so good because of the lack of food.

Use barbless hooks or mash down the barb of the hook because you will
catch a lot of small ones that you will want to release. None of the
lakes in the high sierra are stocked anymore and before they were
stocked there were no fish at all. All the fish I caught were of the
trout species and in lower elevations there are natural endangered
golden trout (Golden Trout Wilderness) so check it out at the fish and
game website.

My favorite rig is; start with a 5-6 foot long piece of 2lb test
attacked to 4lb test on the reel, at the junction of the lines attach a
clear plastic bobber with removable pin (the line runs through the pin
and a swivel stops it from going through) and then use a black ant fly
on the end of the 2lb test. Fill the bobber half full of water and
with practice you should be able to case out 70-80+ feet then slowly
retrieve the line if you haven't already gotten a bite. I tried all
sorts of flies but the black ant almost never fails. With the 2 lb test
you will have to set your drag very low to not snap the leader. It
works great in streams too, just cast to the opposite side of a deep
pool and let it float down stream as you retrieve on a good day I can
catch a fish 9 out of 10 casts (but then only 1 out of 20 is a keeper).

Good luck, Jim

Hi gang

I will be hiking this summer with a friend who is new to long distance
hiking. We will be hiking from Kearsage Pass to the Muir Hut. He wants

to know, which are the better lakes to fish along the way and if there
is any fish othere than trout in them. Thanks for your feedback.
