Finally a question that gets us back to long-distance hiking

Great question, and I look forward to some informed answers.

I've been without health insurance for more years than I care to count, and I've got a pre-existing condition which has led to being without that important insurance for years. I personally am dreading January 2015 when health care is fully implemented and I'm struggling with my ability to pay for some mandated care.

Yet I realize the dangers of backcountry hiking. I need the bare minimum, catastrophe coverage for 5-6 months. If it costs more than $250 a month I cannot cover myself. And believe me, I cannot get a premium that low.

What is the best coverage for basic emergencies?
