We carry Mountain House meals repackaged in quart size Ziploc vacuum freezer
bags all the time. The vacuum pack makes for a small package. We just open,
place inside a cozy to keep warm, add boiling water to the bag and let it
sit and rehydrate. The cozy also makes it comfortable to hold the hot bag
while eating the cooked food. We store and pack out the used bags. As far
as shelf life, we have used the contents of year old Mountain House packages
and sent them to sit 4 months in advance for resupplies and they were still
fine.

There's also a great book on how to make your own meals called Freezer Bag
Cooking:

We bought our cozies here: http://www.trailcooking.com/store/fbc-cozy
(They also sell the book above for $1 less than Amazon, as well as a starter
kit that includes book, cozy and a long-handled spoon.)

I will note that an long handled spoon makes eating from the bag and cozy
much easier...
