My idea in rainy places is an Integral Designs sylnylon poncho over a fleece
jacket. The poncho covers your torso and your pack and it furnishes plenty
of ventilation. I might wear rain pants if its cold.

Now that you mention umbrellas, I would've loved to have had one in some
parts of Washington where the rain was constant. Those were the days eh? I
carried at Patagonia H2no, which was a big mistake as I was wet all the
time. Though, as Yogi said, I mainly used my jacket for warmth, and for
good measure in the Sierras when scaling sketchy things.

That said, unless you're wearing a piece of plastic, riding a stock animal
in one of those medieval tent things, or sporting a rubber body suit,
you're going to get wet up there in the Northwest. It's going to happen.
But by that time you'll be a badass and it won't matter.

Remember class of 2012, Washington is the crucible. DO NOT forget about it.
You won't hear much about the state until you're there, it's shrouded in a
sort of mystery. And because of this, a lot of people were miserable.

Happy Hiking,

Rattler
