You could have your friend drive you to Rainy Pass, or one of the jeep roads south of Hart's Pass. You could hike up to Canada and back to Hart's Pass, or even the Slate Peak parking lot above Harts Pass, then catch a ride from someone (lots of day hikers there, esp. on w/ends) down to the Mazama Gen'l Store, which is on 20 just at the bottom of the road that goes up to Harts Pass. From there, catch a ride up Hwy 20 to Rainy Pass and head SOBO.

I've driven to Harts Pass about 20-30 times. Right after snowmelt, it can be pretty washboarded, so if your friend has a smaller passenger car it might be iffy. You can always check the road reports once it's open, or ask at the Mazama Gen'l Store which you have to pass when you turn off 20 to head up the Lost River Road which takes you to Harts Pass. I have been up there in early July before, but last year the road stayed closed miles below Harts Pass until mid- August, I believe.
