Since I'm planning on a 13 hike I can give you what I'm doing. First decide
budget. Then decide which direction, NOBO or SOBO. Then hone in on a 3-4
week window you plan to start. study the books, maps, and plan on how fit
you will be when you start your hiking. If you can hike "x" amount of miles
per day then you can start figuring out the food drops.

Reading info on this site has helped me a lot.
Figure out your gear and to me keeping it light is the goal due to the
extra food and water you carry on the PCT versus the AT. Get familiar wth
the trail, surrounding towns and roads and it all falls into place. Two
years is a long time to plan, it doesn't have to be done quickly. In fact
once you are on trail, a lot orf the planning will change due to
circumstances, so remain flexible.
In short know what your abilities are, an honest assessment and go from
there. Think your gear out...from shoes to head gear and the basic
three....sleeping, shelter and backpack. Get knowledgeable on navigation
and have a blast.....don't over think it either. I love the KISS method,
"Keep It Simple Stupid".
