I agree. Assuming not much gear replacement, 30 zero days @ $100 each for
hotel, 5 restaurant meals,(Dinner on arrival, 3 meals for the zero, then
Breakfast on departure)  and lots of beer, and that is an extra $3000.

If you prepare your own food, and mail from CA, you should be able to get
by on $5-7/day to eat on the trail. "Buy as you go" costs more to buy, but
less to ship, so it probably evens out.

This question is a little like "how much does a car cost," with so many
variables, mostly having to do with comfort, that a reasonable answer is
almost impossible to calculate.

That being said, pampering yourself in town, and eating like a pig, really
goes a long way towards keeping your morale up. Being poor sucks.
