2 random thoughts come to mind following these threads:

For those who can't afford the ambulance and medical expenses, next time Granny has one of her "spells" they can drive her up to a trailhead, haul her out a mile or 2, pin a SPOT to her, push the button, and hightail it.  Let SAR do the rest.  (hoping the cougars don't get 'er first) 

Re: healthcare in Europe.  One of my favorite authors, David Sedaris, describes his ER experience in France when he had a painful kidney stone.  They hooked him up to an IV, gave him a shot of Demerol and an ashtray before they even bothered to take his name or check for insurance.   His writing style is understated exaggeration but the point was that he received free medical care without regard for his country of origin or his means.  That was 10-15 years ago, it might be different now.
