[pct-l] Camping at independence

Yes, you can stay at the campground 1/2 mile from the PO on the road that leads to the onion valley trailhead.  I stayed there last night and had no troubles. There is a $10 fee per vehicle but since I had no vehicle I didn't have to pay.
