Paul Hacker and I came upon a horse pack train a day shy of the border. We hated walking behind horses and so decided to pass them. After catching up and following them for a switchback or two, the leader, a cowboy in a real ten gallon hat, pulled over and motioned for us to pass. We quietly passed the loaded horses one by one and when we came to the leader he swore and said he'd been packing in the Pacific Northwest for 30 years and had never been passed by hikers. He asked us where we were coming from. (BIG sh!t-eating grins on Paul and I) why the Mexican border! We replied. "Bullsh!t!" He swore. "No Sh!t!" we replied. Then it came to him, "You, you, your hikin' that, that Pacific Coast, I mean Pacific Crest Trail, aren't you?" "YEP!". "Why, the Canadian border is just over there!" "We know, we've been aiming for it for 5 and a half months." He reached into his saddlebag and withdrew a bottle of Jack Daniels and gave it to us!

So, you never can tell with horse packers, whether they're going to be rude and arrogant and yell at you to get "OFF of the trail, ON THE DOWN SIDE IDIOT!", or be kind and interested and even contribute something for the celebration of your quest.
