I may have missed some of this discussion but this is what I found out about hitchhiking. I spoke with Sergeant Francone, head of the Highway Patrol in Lone Pine, and he said as long as you are off the road, there is nothing wrong with hitchhiking. No need to be anal here--stay off the road--stand on the shoulder.
