[pct-l] alternative to bread?

Good morning, Zombie,

I used to make hardtack – or ship’s bread, or whatever else it’s commonly
called – but in the last few years I’ve gotten lazy and bought the stuff
from the bulk-bin at WinCo.  These are about 3” in diameter, and are not as
hard as the classic stuff.  Being round they don’t pack as densely as the
traditional rectangular pieces, and they aren’t nearly as hard as the Civil
War variety.  Being only white flour, salt, and water they’re a bit short
of balanced nutrition. The hardtack famous during the Civil War had a
high-protein supplement:  Lots of weevils found their home in the ‘tack
squares.

Something nutritionally far superior is the long-time mountaineer’s
favorite, Logan Bread.  It can be every bit as hard and dense as hardtack,
but it tastes better.  I used to make quite a bit of it, but in recent
years I’ve trended towards snack crackers which have more oil.  There are
many recipes for Logan Bread can be found with a search.
