They're not critical as long as you have good maps, though some people (like
me) really enjoy them because they give a lot of context about the history
and geology of what you're walking through.

However, in SoCal make sure you have complete information about where and
how to locate water sources.  Maps alone might not be enough.  AsABat's
water report might cover you there.
