McKenzie Pass will be much easier than Santiam Pass.

At McKenzie Pass, you have two captive audiences - the cars parked at the
Dee Wright Observatory to the west (IMO, your best bet) or those at the Lava
Camp Lake CG parking lot to the east. Walk up to the observatory parking lot
and start asking.

Cars moving over Santiam Pass are hauling at a high speed, headed for Bend
and Sun River. Hitching could be difficult. Stand where you're visible for a
long ways and where cars have a good spot to pull over without risking a
rear-ending. There is a trailhead parking lot on the north side of the pass
and you might Yogi a ride there.....IF someone is leaving and IF they are
heading east instead of west back to Salem or Portland.

Better yet, resupply at Big Lake youth Camp and skip the hitch altogether.
