I have always done exactly that.  Shortened them as much as possible and
liberally duct taped them vertically to my pack.  Then into an oversized
duffel, with a collapsable self addressed box to mail the duffel home.  The
duffel was only needed once as some airlines will provide a free bag at the
terminal counter in which to place the pack.
