Hi gang,
I waited until the bikes on the PCT debate cooled down so this would not
get buried in the debate.
I thought you might be interested in reading what Scott
Williamson,....with 13 PCT through hikes (16 if you
add section hikes) including a PCT yo-yo and 3 PCT speed
records,...."The unquestionable....undeniable.... indisputable...."KING
of the PCT",....had to say about his PCT record attempt earlier this year.
BTW....the fire that Scott and his friend put out was started by a camp
fire not properly put out by some prior campers.
From the pictures it looks like the fire crept out under the fire ring
rocks and just kept on creeping.
Another reminder of how careless some hikers are with camp fires and the
importance to make absolutely sure the fire is extinguished before
departing.

Hey Reinhold, Michelle said you were trying to hold of me. I ended up
getting off the PCT in northern Oregon due to all the fire closures that
were in place. I was only on the trail 13 days and was on a 43 mile a
day pace and ready to up it when I came upon the first closure. I got
off the trail went home for two weeks then went to the Sierra north of
Yosemite. I ended up spending a month hiking the the sierra high route
and various other cross country/mountaineering routes working my way to
Kennedy meadows where I finished last week. I was only on the Muir trail
a few times and mostly was off trails or on other trails in the area. I
had decided from the outset to go slow with a heavy pack since my goal
was to use up my leftover food from the PCT so it was a different kind
of trip for me, but it was a lot of fun. My friend Scott Wales met me
for the last leg from Independence south and during that leg we found a
wildfire in the Kern river canyon that we spent hours putting out by
dumping tons of water on it. All in all it was a great month spent out
hiking. That combined with the three weeks of pre hiking I did in the
north cascades of Washington before I started the PCT sort of made up
for not doing the PCT all the way.
I am already planning and scheming for next years PCT hike. I want to do
a northbound speed hike again, I feel going that direction I could stand
a good chance of pulling several days off the current record, but as
Tuna helpers hike illustrates snow can be an issue on a northbound.
Anyway sorry I did not get hold of you sooner I just got back three days
ago from my sierra trip.
How was your summer?
I will be in touch, Your friend Scott
