I won't give advice to you, but I will tell you what I do

That depends a lot on where I am getting the water.

High streams in the mountains? I don't treat.

A stinking cow trough in the So-Cal desert, I'll strain it with a
cloth to remove the big chunks, then use Aqua Mira. They maybe add
flavoring to kill the foul taste. The Aqua Mira will kill giardia, and
any bacterial or viral bugs in the water.

As a backup, I bring  4 grams of Tinidazole. If I get GI discomfort
with farts and burps slowly over a period of several days and it stays
with me for a few days, I would take 2 grams of the stuff to treat the
giardia. If I get suddenly, violently ill, I know have something else
(probably food borne) and I don't bother with the Tinidazole. FWIW, I
have never gotten sick trekking in the USA.
