Lindsey asked about keeping track of fire restrictions:

It can be pretty hard to keep track of the current restrictions. Regulations change with jurisdiction and may come and go throughout the season depending of fire danger.

If you have access to the net you can look at the PCTA trail conditions page or the forest or park website. They should have notices when fire bans go into effect.

The trailheads may have signs if bans have been put in effect.

On the trail ask anyone you see that may be informed; rangers, fire fighters, trail crew.

In the Sierra there are elevation limits for fires which are usually marked by signs and noted in the guidebooks.

In Southern CA section A campfires or ground fires are generally prohibited outside of established campgrounds or picnic areas with fire rings. Currently the Cleveland National Forest has a ban on all stoves outside of established campgrounds but this usually isn't in effect when the NOBOs start out in the spring, however SOBOs should expect a high level of restrictions in Southern California. I would expect most of the other Southern CA sections have similar restrictions.
