Weak ankles, yes.  Weak from the damage of previous sprains.  My balance is
fine, though.

I'm not an expert in biomechanics or anything so I can only speak about my
own experience.  I can tell you that when my toes are pointed slightly
inward, my weight naturally falls on the outside edges of my soles and my
ankles are unstable.  When I change my gait so that my toes are pointed
straight ahead, my weight shifts to the middle of my soles and my ankles
become much more stable.  If my toes are pointed slightly outward, my weight
shifts to the inside edges of my soles and it becomes almost physically
impossible to roll my ankles outward in the classic sprain motion.

Maybe that information is useful to someone else, or maybe not.  :-)
