I carry my phone in an accessible place, since I use the camera to document my hikes.
You can buy an Otter case, expensive but pretty bomb proof.  A cheaper option is to make a soft case (i folded a pot holder in half and stitched it up to make a padded case), then stuffed it in a ziplock if I needed water proofing.
Anybody out there remember the song 'put it in a zip lock'?
