Ground Pounder,

If your goal is to demonstrate that my criticism of Reinhold's joke is
misplaced you have failed.  Suggesting your wife is the arbiter of what is
sexist, or not, doesn't hold water.  You are perfectly capable of making
that judgment yourself. As Justice Marshall said of pornography, "you know
it when you see it," or in this case read it.  Reinhold's joke is sexist, as
many people who are on the PCT list have pointed out.

Your ad hominem attack (name calling) doesn't help make your point.  People
resort to ad hominem rhetoric when they don't have the facts and therefore
must resort to irrational nasty argumentation. Ad hominem attacks demean the
attacker by demonstrating their point of view is neither competent nor
rational.

I believe Reinhold in his defense stated, "I hold women on a pedestal" and
"I treat my women right".  Both these statements are also sexist.

But, here is the bottom line.  I am not trying to change Reinhold.  I'm just
suggesting that he should not write things he knows will be offensive on a
public bulletin board where his comments have nothing to do with the purpose
of that bulletin board.

If Reinhold is a man of character and sincerely wishes to "treat women
right", then he would refrain from making statements that anger them, and by
the way most men as well.

I believe someone posted in Reinhold's defense that he actually is a nice
guy.  If that is the case, then the proper thing for Reinhold to do is to
apologize; and, not one of those "no apology apologies".  He should say
something like, "after reading some of the responses to my recent joke I
understand I have insulted some, perhaps many, of you. For that I truly
apologize."  For an apology to be truly useful one should not try to defend
one's actions while making the apology.  Reinhold might be very surprised at
the positive response he could get from such an apology.  And, after making
the apology, the issue is likely to die a quick and quiet death.

"How's Your Trail?"  I read Reinhold's "Men are Happier Camper" thing and
laughed awhile back. I read it again because of all the hype. Then I read it
to my wife to see her reaction. You know what she said???  "IT'S ALL TRUE
EXCEPT #10". Reinhold is a Great guy that likes to joke yes and I have met
Him and he is no "SISSY LA LA"  like some of you. Remember "Be Prepared"
(for anything)

You knew it was offensive when you posted it?  

It is offensive and it is not consistent with the purpose of this listserv.

Sexist jokes are no more welcome than racist jokes or ethnic jokes.

Hi gang,
When you are hiking, did you ever notice that there are far more hiker dudes
than hiker babes?
Why is that?
It could be that male hikers are happier campers.
We need to reverse that.
We need more good looking hiker babes on the trail.
Lord knows we have enough homely looking dudes on the trail.
  
TEN  REASON  WHY  MEN  ARE  HAPPIER  CAMPERS.

1.   We never get pregnant.
2.   It does not matter if our legs are hairy.
3.   We never have strap problems.
4.   Our underwear is warmer.
5.   We can do our nails with a pocket knife.
6.   We don't need to carry birth control pills or tampons.
7.   We can pee without getting out of the tent on a rainy night.
8.   We can hike topless.
9.   We don't need to put our hair up in curlers.
10.  We can light a stove without starting  a forest fire.

No wonder men are happier campers.

I think I will now sign off, for I hear the distant thunder of the heavy
artillery, aimed at me by those who do not support my point of view.
