Good evening,

There’s good news about keeping bears out of your food with mothballs: In
the SIBBG controlled, i.e. the Sierras, a bear ‘can is absolutely required
so additionally spreading mothballs around won’t hurt a thing if it makes
you feel better. Everywhere else in the three-state length of the PCT the
bears are wild and they won’t come anywhere humans, so spreading mothballs
won’t hurt anything there either if it makes you feel better. The only
problem is you’ll spend 5-6 months smelling like Aunt Maud’s hall closet.

One person had an interesting idea to keep bears away from his food with
peanut butter: He smeared it on someone else’s tent.
