a gun?  I think a full sized gurkha kukri would suffice...you could chop heads off with it :D

If you are hiking in the same timeframe as the "herd" you will be quite safe from "other" persons - thrus look out for and take care of each other. If your hike is timed a bit different, you should still be quite safe. I would recommend that you do not disclose your progress on the trail ( where you are at/ when you are going to arrival at a trail town, etc) on social media that can be read by the public - just keep it to family/selected friends.
